Analysis of the present situation and deep-seated contradictions of railway development in China

Abstract


The current situation of China’s railway development shows that passenger transport and freight transport are its main sources
of income, and the passenger transport income has exceeded the freight income in recent years. In terms of industry structure, the national
railway, joint venture railway and local railway constitute China’s railway network, and the State Railway Group and its subsidiaries control
the dispatching operation. Railway planning and development has experienced the expansion from “four vertical and four horizontal” to
“eight vertical and eight horizontal”, and the construction of high-speed railways has been rapid. However, deep-seated contradictions have
gradually emerged, including stagnant growth in freight and mail turnover, declining freight profitability, and structural problems caused by
differences in passenger base and freight distance between high-speed rail and universal speed rail. In addition, China Railway Group’s debt
continues to rise and its profitability is weak.
